Linus Evans stares out a rain-streaked window in his melancholy. The wall bleeds gently behind him. He lowers his head onto the windowsill and sighs.<\/p>\n
He makes a little sign. He photocopies it using a photocopier brought to him by his black dog. He posts it here and there.<\/p>\n
\u201cFound,\u201d it says. \u201cOne boy. May be the antichrist. Looking for someone to read Gothic poetry and love him. Also there is a dog.\u201d<\/p>\n
He draws a picture of himself. He draws a picture of the dog. He puts his phone number on it.<\/p>\n
Then he waits.<\/p>\n
Not far away \u2014 just three miles or so, as the crow flies \u2014 live Amelia Friedman and her son Tom.<\/p>\n
Tom\u2019s almost as lonely, because he knows that he\u2019s going to destroy the world one day.<\/p>\n
He tells his Mom. He explains his concerns.<\/p>\n
\u201cI made a time machine,\u201d he says, \u201cand had a fabulous adventure in the future. But everyone says, \u2018That\u2019s right, Tom! You\u2019re the one who killed off all humanity and warmed the Earth!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd what was I doing?\u201d asks Amelia.<\/p>\n
He looks blankly at her.<\/p>\n
\u201cI mean, in the future?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI killed humanity<\/i>, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n
