He waves his hands around.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s really hard to make a hammer,\u201d he says, \u201cto smoosh outcomes into the desired configuration. It\u2019s like, how do you get enough of an understanding of desired<\/em> from your head, as it were, into its?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cBut you think a boot can do it?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cA boot\u2019s full of people,\u201d says Tom. \u201cA boot\u2019s full of life, and minds, and people who can operate the various levers and . . . eyelets . . . and whatnot. A boot can manage what a hammer cannot.\u201d<\/p>\n They can already see it, both of them, in their heads \u2014 the world, blue and honest below them, as they hypothetically stare down on it through Amber\u2019s pseudo-glass shielding from space.<\/p>\n \u201cWe could smush it all,\u201d says Cheryl. \u201cNot just wolves and cannibals.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThe snake,\u201d says Tom.<\/p>\n \u201cThe living storm,\u201d says Cheryl.<\/p>\n \u201cBad grades.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cHaha,\u201d laughs Cheryl. She\u2019s pretending to be tipsy. She leans a bit, over the balcony edge. \u201cIt\u2019s perfect, Tom.
