I<\/span>t had proved disturbingly difficult to arrange for a paradox; eventually Professor Sutedja <\/a>simply accepted that her younger self would attend the Lethal Magnet School for Wayward Youth and her older self would act as a Professor of Temporal Administration there and nothing could really be done. She tested some lottery numbers to check for a butterfly effect, found the results satisfactory, and ceased to worry about the details thereafter, allowing the School\u2019s visitors from the 20th and earlier 21st century to take care of themselves.<\/p>\n

The time travelers from the future were a different matter.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not something you can avoid,\u201d she explains to a student. Jared. \u201cIf you want to build time machines.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou avoided it!\u201d he protests.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy case was a little weird,\u201d she says. It was, in fact. She\u2019d bought a cursed staff at a con. \u201cIf you\u2019re going to actually build time machines, and learn to travel to the past and the future, this is what happens.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jared looks at the window for a while. He stares at the mysterious visitor. After a while, he fills out the paperwork.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s you, then?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s all right to want it to not be you,\u201d she says. \u201cIf you want to schedule a dummy. We can do that. We can bring in someone to pretend to be you. It\u2019s easier to send paperwork than people back through time, you know, and we\u2019ll gladly cover the actor\u2019s costs from a sports page.\u201d<\/p>\n

He goes back to the window. He looks through it a while.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s screaming,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can take his stuff,\u201d she says. \u201cI bet that it\u2019s cool. There\u2019s probably a message. I bet it\u2019s important. But please remember. You don\u2019t have to. You can wait. You can ask for an actor. That\u2019s fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo they ever . . . stop? Screaming?\u201d<\/p>\n

They\u2019re all so very young. It\u2019s ridiculous. All the kids, before they actually grow up in the future and start sending back warnings, are so terribly, risibly young.<\/p>\n
